The following is a listing of answers
to connection questions.
What modem speeds does WarpNet
support?
In all locations, WarpNet supports the V.92 56K
protocol. Depending upon your location, we may also
provide x2 and/or K56flex support as well.
In our Springfield, IL POP, we offer
support for single and dual-channel (64 and 128K) ISDN
connections. We have no current plans to offer ISDN
access in other cities.
Does WarpNet
offer high-speed access such as ISDN, DSL or cable modems?
Currently, WarpNet supports only analog modem
connections. ISDN service is available to Springfield,
IL customers. We do however, provide T1 and
fractional-T1 dedicated services for businesses.
In Springfield, IL, WarpNet is waiting
on the installation of fiber optics, which will allow for
DSL access to customers. AT&T currently holds all
rights to the cable system, therefore we are unable to offer
any type of cable modem access.
Does WarpNet
support multilink-PPP?
Yes. We support standard multilink-PPP which is
built into Dial-Up Network on newer versions of Microsoft
Windows. We do not support proprietary multilink
protocols that require special add-on software.
For more information and rates on
multilink, please call (217) 546-8888.
Why can't I
connect at 56K?
There are several reasons that you may not be able to
reach 56K speeds. First of all, please note that a
full 56K is not possible. A "56K" connection
means anything above 33K and anything below 56K. Phone
line conditions determine the actual connection speed,
however most customers should expect to receive around
50-52K.
1.) You do not have a compatible
56K modem. There are several 56K technologies that
were used in modems. The most recent one is V.92,
which is a standard that all new modems use and is supported
at all WarpNet POPs. WarpNet supports x2 and K56flex
as well, however both of those technologies are not
supported in all locations. Please call (217) 546-8888
for further details.
2.) Phone line conditions.
Static on analog lines can cause your modem to be unable to
connect at 56K speeds. You may want to disconnect all
cordless phones, phone line surge protectors, and other
suspicious equipment from your line to see if the problem
clears up. If it does, you have a static problem.
How can I get a
56K modem?
WarpNet offers 56K modems to its Springfield, IL (and
surrounding communities) customers for $20. Click
here for more information.
If you are a member from another area,
you may purchase a 56K modem from any computer hardware
reseller (such as Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.). We
recommend 3Com/US Robotics modems for the greatest speed and
reliability.
Why do I get
disconnected periodically?
There are several reasons why you may get disconnected
periodically from WarpNet.
1.) Phone line conditions.
Static on analog lines can cause your modem to be unable to
send and receive data from our modems, thus resulting in a
disconnect. You may want to disconnect all cordless
phones, phone line surge protectors, and other suspicious
equipment from your line to see if the problem clears
up. If it does, you have a static problem.
2.) Someone is calling
you. If you have call waiting, you must disable it
before connecting to the Internet. Please contact
our technical support for directions on how to do this.
3.) You are staying idle too
long. If you simply leave your computer connected to
the Internet, and no data is being sent or received by your
computer, our modems will disconnect you after approximately
one hour.
